Shap Long Valley, South Lantau, Hong Kong
about 60000m²
Key words: Hydrological interaction、 Soil diversity、 Ecological observation、 Marine-debris removal
Located within the floodplain and seasonal wetland of Shap Long Valley, the site supports rich ecological diversity, including freshwater meadows, mangroves, and habitats for crabs, fish, shellfish, butterflies, and other species. The interaction between river flow and seawater at the estuary also creates a distinctive mosaic of soils, expressed through varied colours and textures. However, ocean currents have deposited large quantities of marine debris along the shoreline, degrading both the coastal landscape and visitors’ experience.
The project aims to enhance public access and observation of the estuarine environment, allowing visitors to experience the diverse soil conditions and dynamic hydrological processes at close range, while integrating opportunities for beach clean-up and marine-debris removal.
